Cell Division

Each day after that, Officer Riley bought her iPad and I would talk to her while we listened to the inspirational music she played. It was a true comfort for me and I looked forward to it every day.

Now if any of you don’t know, I’m here to tell you that every time something good happens, you can almost guarantee that a negative force will try to come in and rob you of that goodness. Later that evening, I had a run in with this chick that decided it was her right to mess with me about some nonsense.

I barely spoke to the chick, so I was very surprised when she addressed me incorrectly. At first I let her talk, she had that right. But then she got a little too out of hand and I responded by grabbing her by her neck. We locked up and everybody at the table disbursed from the confrontation. I felt all of the anger and aggression of what I had been going through rise up in me. I hadn’t felt like this since I had the fight in elementary school when the boy was teasing me about my parents.

I punched the hell out of her and immediately we started tussling. The officers rushed in and called for back-up.

“Let her go, or else I’ll mace you!” he ordered.

I thought about the sting of that pepper spray, and I let her go.

“You’re lucky,” I called to her, as I was pulled away and lead off to confinement.

A couple of days had passed and I tried to sleep through all of them. But that didn’t work, because a person could only sleep so much. On the third day, my door popped open, and Officer Thomas walked into the cell.

“Phillips, I’ve only been off for a few days and you already in trouble. I’ll get you out of here don’t worry. I’ll have you transferred to another dorm.”

Usually the angels would hover over me near the ceiling, but today she was standing before me in my secluded cell. The punishment for fighting was at least twenty one days but I’d only been in three. That was a blessing because I would’ve gone crazy being in solitary confinement for so many days.

I was moved from C-3 to C-2 that night. I was ready to go home and get out of this crap with these crazy women. I was told to wait a few minutes while they assign me my new room. I took that time to observe my new surroundings and analyze who I would be dealing with now. I was moved into my room and met my new bunkee, Shontavia. She was a cute girl with a pop star attitude.

“Call me Tay,” she said.

Her demeanor was easy going, kind of like mine. She seemed really cool and laid back. In jail, everybody has a story of who they were on the streets. Everybody was somebody. They all lay claim to the top dudes with the deepest pockets, the baddest cliques and everybody was a millionaire.
